Australian Dorper Sheep and The Australian White Sheep- The Meat Machines
The Dorper breed was developed in South Africa in the 1930s utilising the The Dorset Horn and Blackhead Persian. The breed was first introduced into Australia in 1996 with the release of Dorper embryos from South Africa for sale. They are referred to as hair sheep as quality dorpers require no shearing and given the right genetics lose their hair during the warmer weather. If you don’t buy quality you may find your dorpers don’t shed (lose) their hair in Summer and this will mean higher costs in shearing to prevent external parasites and higher veterinary costs. Quality really matters and is the difference between success and failure and your profit.
Australian Dorper Sheep have become very popular as they are extremely tough, adaptable, fast growing, parasite resistant and produce one of the healthiest meats available (technical papers available). In addition they can produce fine quality leather. There are only minor requirements for annual shearing, no necessity for mulesing, flystrike treatment, lice treatment and tail docking. Because of their polyestrus breeding there is also no mating season; they can be mated at whatever time of the year suits their owner. This makes the dorper the highest performing animal that we export.
Cluny sheep exports focus on the incredibly tough and adaptable super sheep the Australian White, Dorper and Dorper crossbreds. Other breeds available on request.
The Australian White was developed in 2011 to be a self-replacing, haired, meat sheep that required minimal maintenance that is still evolving. The four breeds of sheep were selected to develop the breed were chosen for specific traits they could bring to the breed. These breeds were the Poll Dorset, Texel, White Dorper and Van Rooy.
We have available dorper sheep that we have assessed are extremely suitable for not only tropical climates in South East Asia (Thailand, Philippines, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia etc.) as well as Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekhistan, Kyrgystan , Tajikistan, Russia and the Central Asian region as well as the Middle East.
